Youth Serves Manitoba

*** In September 2008 a new program for older girls will be launched. Cadets, Junior Leaders and Rangers will be combined and called Rangers. In this new, more flexible program, girls can participate either as a Ranger or a Junior Leader, or both.

This is the most senior of our girl programs. It is for young adult girls ages 15 to 17. The Rangers uniform consists of a light blue short sleeve or long sleeve t-shirt or a red v-neck t-shirt, navy cargo pants or skirt, also available is a navy hoodie and navy polar fleece vest, tie to correspond to their branch (navy, yellow or red). There is also a beige camp hat. All of the uniform pieces are available at your local Guide store.

The Junior Leader wears a navy blue and white scarf with her uniform. She will follow the Rangers core program but as a Junior Leader she will help out in a unit. She may choose to help out in any branch with girls younger then she is. She will learn to lead, teach and participate with the unit of her choice. The Cadet wears a yellow and white scarf with her uniform. The Cadet program also permits these young girls to participate in other branches to assist the unit Guiders in delivering the program. The Ranger wears a red and white scarf with her uniform. A Ranger is required to complete the Core Program as well as many different challenges. The challenges are broken up into 14 interest areas from Active Living to Women's Concerns.

All Ranger members can work towards receiving 3 different awards:

  • The Chief Commissioners Gold Award: To receive this award, a girl must complete all of the challenges in the Core plus the challenges in their branch's program. This Award is usually presented to the recipient at a special ceremony held in Winnipeg each summer
  • The Commonwealth Award: The award is presented to the Ranger Member who completes the requirements specific to this award. The recipient can receive her pin at the Annual Citizenship event held in the spring.
  • The Duke of Edinburgh's Award: There are three levels of achievement for this award: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Participants of this award set their own goals in four areas: Service, Expeditions and Explorations, Skills, and Physical Fitness. This Award is for all Young Canadians between the ages of 14 and 25 and is usually presented to the recipient in a formal ceremony by a member or representative of the Royal Family.
